Product DescriptionIt takes a certain kind of comic genius to create a character who is, to quote the classic Sondheim lyric, appealing and appalling. But be forewarned: Borat is not "something for everyone." It arrives as advertised as one of the most outrageous, most offensive, and funniest films in years. Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen reprising the popular character from his Da Ali G Show, leaves his humble village to come to "U.S. of A" to film a documentary. After catching an episode of Baywatch in his New York hotel room, he impulsively scuttles his plans and, accompanied by his fat, hirsute producer (Hardy to his Laurel), proceeds to California to pursue the object of his obsession, Pamela Anderson. Borat is not about how he finds America; it's about how America finds him in a series of increasingly cringe-worthy scenes. Borat, with his '70s mustache, well-worn grey suit, and outrageously backwards attitudes (especially where Jews are concerned) interacts with a cross-section of the populace, catching them, a la Alan Funt on Candid Camera, in the act of being themselves. Early on, an unwitting humour coach advises Borat about various types of jokes. Borat asks if his brother's retardation is a ripe subject for comedy. The coach patiently replies, "That would not be funny in America." NOT! Borat is subversively, bracingly funny. When it comes to exploring uncharted territory of what is and is not appropriate or politically correct, Borat knows no boundaries, as when he brings a fancy dinner with the southern gentry to a halt after returning from the bathroom with a bag of his feces ("The cultural differences are vast," his hostess graciously/patronisingly offers), or turns cheers to boos at a rodeo when he calls for bloodlust against the Iraqis and mangles "The Star Spangled Banner." Success, John F. Kennedy once said, has a thousand fathers. A paternity test on Borat might reveal traces of Bill Dana's Jose Jimenez, Andy Kaufman, Michael Moore, The Jamie Kennedy Xperiment, and Jackass. Some scenes seem to have been staged (a game Anderson, whom Borat confronts at a book signing, was reportedly in on the setup), but others, as the growing litany of lawsuits attests, were not. All too real is Borat's encounter with loutish Southern frat boys who reveal their sexism and racism, and the disturbing moment when he asks a gun store owner what gun he would recommend to "kill a Jew" (a Glock automatic is the matter-of-fact reply). Comedy is not pretty, and in Borat it can get downright ugly, as when Borat and his producer get jiggly with it during a nude fight that spills out from their hotel room into the hallway, elevator, lobby and finally, a mortgage brokers association banquet. The latest reviews have been displayed below. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan [2006] This film is funny. Don't take things too seriously though or you might be offended! There are some scenes, which, quite frankly, are hilarious, and others are simply gross. I won't tell you and spoil it for you if you haven't seen it for yourself yet. The reactions of some of the US people to Borat's antics as he makes his documentary on how to improve society in Kazakhstan are really funny - typically American in fact (no offense to any americans viewing this!) especially one particular scene where Borat interviews some US feminists - their reactions to Borat's outragous comments is classic. I have watched this film twice now - once at the cinema and once on DVD and each time is just as funny. Be warned that some people may find the content of this offensive if you are easily offended. Nearly Died Laughing. I should have reviewed this movie earlier but now I have seen it a few times, it really did burst half the blood vessels in my face! Its easily the funniest film I've ever seen. God bless Borat :-) I screamed.. I screamed with laughter watching this film. It's marvellous comedy, funny but at the same time, really sad, clever and thought provoking. I'd recommend it highly. I can't believe he did that! The moment Sacha Baron Cohen wanders back into the dining room of some well to do American carrying a bag of his own excrement and then invites his 'girl friend for the night' to the meal you understand that this is a man who will happily do anything to achieve his aims = make people shocked and laugh. There is no doubt in my mind that the film is simply a number of sketches loosely bound together with a pretty rubbish story running through it. It is sure to be not to everyones taste but I did find it amusing. Such a shame! This could have been SUCH a masterpiece! And in the first part of the film, one has high, high hopes! But then the vulgarity just gets trying...and trite. The premise was great (although how they got away with using a real country, I'll never know) and credit definitely needs to go to Pamela Anderson (never thought I'd hear myself say that) for being a real sport through this, but the execution definitely...lacked. Is nice? No, absolutely NOT. Oh dear! It got a couple of laughs out of me, which is why it's not just getting one star; however, it really was quite uncomfortable viewing. I'd always assumed the point of Borat was in tricking people into thinking he, and the Kazakh traditions he talks about, are real. The film, however, involved far too many scenes where there were no unknowing parties involved. I could only assume we, the audience, were supposed to be amused by his antics directly, and I, for one, was not. The characteristics of Baron Cohens character, and the ludicrous Kazakh culture and traditions he's invented are not amusing in themselves. What is amusing is when he exposes people's ignorance by fooling them into thinking these things are real. The film did far too little of this, and was just, in my opinion, childish, silly, and uncomfortable to watch (and not in a good way). I'd always wondered how well this format would transfer to a feature film - I never expected the result to be quite this bad.
