Product DescriptionSpanish for "Coming Back," Volver is a return to the all-female format of All About My Mother. Unlike Pedro Almodóvar's previous two pictures, the story revolves around a group of women in Madrid and his native La Mancha. (The cast received a collective best actress award at Cannes.) Raimunda (a zaftig Penélope Cruz) is the engine powering this heartfelt, yet humorous vehicle. When husband Paco (Antonio de la Torre) is murdered, Raimunda makes like Mildred Pierce to deflect attention away from daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). After telling everyone the lout has left, she struggles to conceal his body. The other women in her life all have secrets of their own. Her sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), for instance, has taken in their mother, Irene (a sprightly Carmen Maura). Since Irene perished in a fire, is this person a ghost or simply a woman who looks like her? Then there's their childhood friend, Agustina (Blanca Portillo), who is desperate to find out why her mother disappeared after the blaze. Was she responsible? Almodóvar deftly blends the ghost story with the murder mystery in his tribute to the Italian neo-realist films of the 1950s. The resilient Raimunda is a throwback to the earthy heroines of Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani. The latter appears in Luchino Visconti's Bellissima, which shows up on Sole's television one night (thus confirming the link). If Almodóvar's 16th feature lacks the emotional punch of the more audacious Talk to Her, it's less heavy-handed than Bad Education and Cruz is a revelation. --Kathleen C. Product ReviewsCustomers have given Volver (Almodovar) [2006] an average customer review rating of 4.0 out of 5. The latest reviews have been displayed below. More strong women please! What a great film. My husband gave up after the first five minutes but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Penelope Cruz is stunning and all the female characters are wonderful. A pleasure to watch. The scene with the song was just beautiful. Volver I like quirky Spanish cinema but whilst I found the Spanish community interesting this couldn't hide the fact that there was no story to hang the film on. Got bored very quickly.......... Nothing amazing to expect from this movie.. When I read the reviews I really thought it would be something..Having won an Oscar also..But, sincerely I can't see where the "masterpiece" is.. The story is boring without logical arguments (Cruz's daugther is also her sister, but that child was born perfectly healthy???)-typical Almodovar, the performances are so so, not funny at all by the way (except that of a prostitute),the movie does not lead to any exciting development, very predictible from the beginning. What is so special about this movie? The only nice feature in the movie was the cultural element, that of Spanish villages and customs,NOTHING ELSE!Waste of time.. Almodovar at his best! This is a gem. Other reviews sum it up brilliantly, but what I love about this is the stunning use of colour, and the lovely performances. This film is tragedy and comedy perfectly married together, and Penelope Cruz proves herself to be an actor worthy of the name. She must be glad she escaped from Hollywood. We are. It matters not if you are an Almodovar fan, this is a film worth having, because each time you see it, something new will emerge. Enjoy! Almodovar Does It Again Volver is another masterpiece from filmmaker Pedro Almodovar which stars Penelope Cruz in an Oscar-nominated performance as Raimunda, a hard working Mother living in Madrid with her daughter. Her sister Sole lives nearby and the pair are extremely close. Their simple lives take a supernatural turn, however, when their deceased Mother comes back into the picture. Or is she? An intriguing and heartfelt portrait of the lives of the women from one family that will never be the same again. Everything about this film screams Almodovar and he is still on top form with this, his twenty-ninth film, examining one of his favourite subjects: women. Penelope Cruz shines in a performance that should have bagged her an Academy Award and the ensemble cast were rightly awarded the Best Actress trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. Unforgettable.
