Product DescriptionThe Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz Image GalleryClick on a thumbnail on the left to view a larger image on the right.

Product ReviewsCustomers have given The Traveling Wilburys Collection an average customer review rating of 5.0 out of 5. The latest reviews have been displayed below. There aren't enough stars A great collection. I have never tired of TW 1 and 3 and listened to them both hundreds of times. Now the complete collection! A really great present for anybody (any age) who likes a bit of rock with real class. oh so infectious!!! i used to have a tape of the Travelling Wilburys a long time ago which i abused so much listening to it all the time. i got at least 6 of my friends introduced to them and they all loved it, naturally. i don't know where or how i lost that tape almost 20 years ago & i never got round to buying a replacement till now. these songs are so infectious & hummable. they bring back fond memories & you may not know all the words but a few of them just shine through like those evergreen oneliners you hear in films & you keep repeating them all day like a mantra over and over again! when you compare these songs to some of the stuff dished out these days it makes you realise that form may be temporary but class is permanent. highly recommended (and the missus agrees too;-)) Supberb, Fantastic It's rare these days for me to have one CD that is played over and over again - let alone a double album but this compilation has achieved that feat - probably the first release ever to have done that for me. I first hankered after the Wilburys whilst re-discovering George Harrison's solo work but found that the CD releases were commanding vast sums as collectors items. Thankfully this three disc (two audio, one DVD) set filled the void. As I've already said it was the Harrison involvement that hooked me but the contributions of the other Wilburys are equally important. Essentially this album works because it was a bunch of guys having fun and the songs are simple (all quickly written and recorded) and memorable. Of course it's not that simple - when the bunch of guys comprises Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne then it's difficult to imagine it being anything but superb but it could so easily have gone wrong. Thankfully it didn't - just because they were all in it to have fun. The listener does too. Buy with confidence - you'll have no trouble selling it if you don't enjoy it but you won't need to. Absolutely superb. Highly recommended. I have listened to Tom Petty a fair few times in the past. I have heard Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan but never heard the other 2 sing. I would not descibe myself as a fan of any of the singers but having seen the reviews of this album, I was intrigued. I bought it (2 CDs without the DVD). The glowing reviews of this album are accurate. It is superb collection. A group of singers having a great time singing great songs and making great music. The first CD edges it over the second CD but both are very entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyable. Very highly recommended. Great album I'd searched for the Traveling Wilburys for several years - ever since I heard who had played on it, especially George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. The disk numbers were confusing as there were only two volumes - one and three. Disk two is now a DVD of the recording of parts of disk one. The death of Roy Orbison meant that disk three is possibly slightly weaker than the first, but the enjoyment of the band in writing and performing in a relaxed situation comes over loud and clear. I wonder who could create a similar band today and produce so many songs that one just loves to sing along to. It makes me wonder what George could have written for the Beatles if they had allowed him to!
