Product DescriptionEditors were not the only band suckling on Joy Division's bleak teat in 2005 when they released their debut The Back Room, and they never initially seemed the ones most likely to succeed either. They were like a pencil sketch of gothic depression, too tidy, too clean, too neatly attired to attain any lasting emotional credibility. But there was just one problem with that cursory diagnosis; the incendiary skinny-ribbed barrage of short, sharp, repetitive and achingly insistent singles, titled with an absolute maximum of two syllables as if to ram that point home. There was zero puppy fat on Editors' bones, but what they did carry was toned and worked to perfection. But even considering that discipline, the competent grandeur of its follow up, An End Has a Start, takes you aback. Awash with constellation-scraping omnipresence, opening track "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" seems all around you at once, building, lifting and frankly doing a better impression of late 80s U2-sized epic than Coldplay mustered on X&Y. The album rebounds between that sense of rounded, accessible awe and the more industrious pounding in the engine room that they perfected on their debut, the latter particularly demonstrable on the title track and a truly hammering "Escape the Nest". Tom Smith's rudimentary lyrics and forced baritone may lack some of the poetic depth that the music craves, but like their overall style he directs what he does possess with admirable precision. -- James Berry Image GalleryClick on a thumbnail on the left to view a larger image on the right.

Product ReviewsCustomers have given An End Has a Start an average customer review rating of 4.0 out of 5. The latest reviews have been displayed below. This is a grower Not sure to start with but the album improves with every listening, impressive range of music and lyrics in the early tracks but tends to fizzle ouuuuut musically and lyrically safe So..the best band around right now according to some reviewers! Thats not saying a lot in 2007! Lyrically weak. "if a plane were to fall from the sky, how big a hole would it leave?.." you cant deny, its powerful stuff! at least Joy Division's lyrics were thought provoking and intelligent, and Interpol's can be knowingly tongue-in-cheek and witty! This however is music for the masses drivel. I enjoyed the first album. But putting this one into perspective, it just isnt very memorable. That is all! More of the same? I hate to go on about ends and starts but this album very definitely begins better than it finishes. There are some genuine up-tempo highlights, most notably 'Bones' and 'An End Has A Start', while the current single, 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors', has a bassline which leans heavily on Carter USM's 'Sheriff Fatman', so how could this be anything other than brilliant? And then there are the quiet ones - you have to watch those! There is a great difference between a slow song and a boring one and Editors prove this point here. 'The Weight of the World' is a beautiful example of the former, while 'Well Worn Hand' should certainly be filed in the latter category. Some of the tracks are hard to get at first but after a few listens some will begin to unravel, while a few will remain rather dull. Give the album a few listens before writing it off as yet another disappointing second album. Admittedly it doesn't improve on 'The Back Room' but it is a reasonable addition to Editors' catalogue. A Great Follow-up In their second Album, the Editors continue where they left off with the Back Room, combining Tom Smith's brooding, melodic, gothic vocals (more than just a nod to Joy Division) with the almost orchestral sound created on the synths and keyboards. Whilst perhaps slightly less anthemic than their first album, what's lost in sing-alongability is more than made up for with a series of consistently excellent tracks, making this one of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish without getting remotely bored. A top-notch follow-up. Best Album 2007 - Final ! I may be biased here as I've seen Editors live three times now, culminating in one of the best gigs I've ever been to at Brixton earlier this month. I reviewed 'The Back Room' and cruelly gave it 3/5, mainly on the premis of limited listening. I hold my hands up and can convince you all that this album has everything you need to tap your feet, move your arms and chant out lyrics (with or without anyone near you). Stand out tracks are Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors and The Racing Rats. It's a rare thing on modern albums not to have to skip tracks, and you don't need to on this one. Tom Smith sings with passion and you're hooked. Live, they are awesome and few bands can match their intensity. If you're a music lover, get this album ASAP.
