Product Description"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff Image GalleryClick on a thumbnail on the left to view a larger image on the right.

Product ReviewsCustomers have given Memory Almost Full (including Limited Edition Folded Booklet) an average customer review rating of 4.0 out of 5. The latest reviews have been displayed below. IT'S A GROWER IN MY OPINON HIS BEST SINCE FLAMING PIE. GIVE THIS MAN CREDIT HE TRIES TO DO DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC UNLIKE MOST BANDS OUT THERE, WHERE THEY GET A HIT SIMGLE AND EVERYTHING ELSE TENDS TO STAY IN THE SAME FORMAT IE: IT SOUNDS THE SAME. YOU MUST PLAY THIS ALBUM 3 OR 4 TIMES TO START TO GET INTO IT LIKE MOST OF PAULS ALBUMS. HE SEEMS TO HAVE GONE BACK TO A WINGS SOUND OF 74 WITH "ONLY MAMA KNOWS"WHICH I LOVE. MY FAVES ARE " MR BELLAMY", VINTAGE CLOTHES AND FEET IN THE CLOUDS. THE ONLY DOWNER IS THAT I THINK HE IS TRYING TO SING SONGS THAT ARE TOO HIGH FOR HIS VOCALS ESPECIALLY "YOU TELL ME". I EVEN GET THE SENSE THAT PAUL MAYBE WINDING DOWN AS HE THINKS ABOUT HIS LIFE WHICH SEEMS TO COME OUT IN THE TRACK " THE END OF THE END". SO PLEASE PLEASE PLAY THIS A FEW TIMES BEFORE YOU START TO KNOCK IT. BUT I DO HOPE HE DOES TOUR OVER HERE NEXT YEAR AS HE IS FANTASTIC LIVE EVEN AT 65 The Man or the Music? I tend to agree with the reviewer who suggested that it may be the man (national treasure and all that)rather than the music that makes us buy his albums. No stand out tracks here in my opinion and although Dance Tonight may be catchy I have a feeling that in the future it will rank alongside the Frog Chorus. I accept that some albums need a few plays in order to appeal but nothing about this one masde me want to hear it again, at least not straightaway. I'm sure he still has some great music to offer us but just not at the moment. A decent Macca effort This is not as good as the fantastic "Chaos and Creation..." album. In fact, the record before that, "Driving Rain", is probably a bit better than "Memory Almost Full" too. Nevertheless, there are a few exceptionally good songs here, as there always are on a McCartney album - You Tell Me, House of Wax and The End of the End. There are quite a few very good songs that are not quite Macca classics, including Mr Bellamy, Ever-Present Past and That Was Me. Only Mama Knows is also in this category. It might have been a true classic. Initially I thought it was one - a close relative of Jet or Junior's Farm - but in fact the lyrics let it down slightly, being rather contrived and pointless. There are only a couple that I'm not that fond of - Vintage Clothes and Gratitude. Overall, it's a decent collection of songs but not as strong as recent efforts, and maybe strangely lacking in focus for an album with such an obvious theme. That may sound like a contradiction, but somehow I feel it to be the case. Every Song Is Great With The Exception Of Dance Tonight This wonderful Paul McCartney "Memory Almost Full" CD includes a bonus disc with three extra songs and an interview. The bonus songs are stellar including an instrumental gem. "Memory Almost Full" has many fantastic songs including rockers "Only Mama Knows", "House Of Wax" and the riveting "Nod Your Head". Catchy and melodic marvels include the excellent "Vintage Clothes" "Gratitude" and the somewhat spiritial "End Of The End". The only song I don't like is "Dance Tonight" because it sounds too trite. 15 out of 16 songs is very good for the peerless 65 years old former Beatle icon. An Improvement As a die-hard McCartney fan I've been disappointed with his last few albums - they never quite sparked the fun of his earlier work. McCartney at his best can create songs that seem to have been around forever, but sadly he seems to have lost this skill... Having said that, this album is a big improvement on the last couple of albums - who is Mr Bellamy? (when I first heard it I thought of a man going through a bad moment in his relationships not the reported suicide jumper in the McCartney interview?! Interesting!) Has anyone spotted the "nod" to his other "hidden" work - on the 2nd CD is the track 222; check out Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest ~ The Fireman track 444!! (oh and The Fireman is McCartney [2nd album is called "Rushes"]) I still keep hoping McCartney will produce one last belting album to finally seal his position in world music as one of the greatest artists ever!
