Product DescriptionIt's one thing to be celebrated, and it's quite another to become inescapably iconic. Hard-Fi stumbled into the latter with their debut Stars of CCTV, reflecting on life in satellite town UK with stark iconography, articulately pitched lyrics and accessibility sprinkled with the credibility of The Clash's rebel poise--a rare achievement, perhaps only equalled by Arctic Monkeys' and The Streets' snap-shots of teenage life. An icon is not infallible however, and it looked like Hard-Fi's commuter train to realism-central might have been derailed in the run up to this album's release. Their cocky, misguided decision to declare the death of the album cover simply by printing the words "NO COVER ART" on theirs was a bad joke at best. And while the diagnosis for the album itself may not be quite so bad--the buoyant swagger of "Suburban Knights" opens things up without breaking stride--Once Upon a Time in the West does lack the thematic weight of their debut. Musically it is more mature; there are strings everywhere, the ska influence remains but the bright-light club ambience of old is largely smoothed over. "Television" bags a chorus worthy of expectation, blokey-gospel to the extreme, but throws around so much pre-school sloganeering against culture and politics that its effect is dimmed. "We Need Love" is less preachy and works better. "Can't Get Along (Without You)" is a dumb Motown-esque love song, doesn't suit their posture at all, but is just the kind of bubblegum they might have to rely on if their socio-realism has gone flat. --James Berry Image GalleryClick on a thumbnail on the left to view a larger image on the right.

Product ReviewsCustomers have given Once Upon a Time in the West an average customer review rating of 4.0 out of 5. The latest reviews have been displayed below. Brilliant Brilliant CD, i would say that this is better than the stars of cctv, the songs have a much better rhythm and you can really get into some of the songs. Some great tracks with suburban knights, Tonight, cant get along and little angel. This is a must buy for anyone who likes this genre of music. The boys are on song Compared to the debut album this 2nd offering from Hard-Fi stands up just as well to my ears. The production is slicker, vocals more finely honed and instrumentation tighter. The pains, hopes and dreams of living in city suburbs are again the main fuel for the songs that for me give off a 'fuller' sound. The many great hooks and catchier choruses have ensured I have already played this album more times than 'Stars of CCTV'. Hard-Fi are no 'flash in the pan' although i wish the album cover was at least half as good as the great iconic CCTV design of their debut. i don't care what they have to say It is a common misconception that music made by the working classes (Oasis, Kasabian, The enemy etc) is deemed more important than music by bands who let the music speak for itself and dont have to use their social background as a selling point (radiohead, killers, white stripes, Muse). Hard Fi fall into the former catergory, often using cliched problems faced by the "people" fighting "the man". this, of course has been done alot better by oasis over 10 years ago and now sounds tired and meaningless. After their average but somehow successful debut album and their now buldging wallets i would have suspected them to venture to pastures new instead of shamefully trying to reinforce the same message they were "propergandering" on their first album, but, unfortunately, they are happy to lie to their fans to make another fast easy buck. Oh Hard Fi you try so hard to find a solution to the problem, dont you see? YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!!oh and the musics rubbish aswell. Great Stuff This is an excellent second effort. I think the songs are more consistent than the first (which I love). These guys are worth a listen. One of the best British Bands today. HEY HEY HEYYYYYY OH OH OHHHHHH AH AH AHHHHHH HEY HEY HEYYYYYY Like many other reviewers I bought "Once Upon A Time..." upon the strength of "Stars..." Like so MANY others I have NOT been dissapointed! All the tracks are well arranged and SEEM more "polished" (in terms of production anyway) than SOME tracks from "Stars..." I have had this in CD player since I got home. The stand out tracks for me (personally) are "Suburban Knights" Giving my age away here, but sounds a bit The Clash-esque (thats a definite compliment btw), especially the chorus. Also "Tonight" Makes me want to cry (a little bit anyway lol). Too much lost love I suppose? Like the song says "...I cant lose you. So come with me. We'll break free. Tonight, Tonight" Ok, thats my only minor criticism. Some lyrics are a little cliched. BUT there is NO faulting the delivery of expression and feeling AND sheer energy. Last but not least, "Cant Get Along..." This is an instant classic as far as I am concerned. Love the BIIIG! horn arrangements and reminds me of only the best Northern Soul hits. Uplifting mesage too. Home is ALWAYS where the heart is. REALLY LOVE THIS TRACK! Great follow up. Looking forward to the third album.
