Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous [CD + DVD] [Aus. Import] [1978] (DVD)

simply the best There is a lot of discussion about how much of this album is live. The only bits that aren't are a couple of overdubs on backing vocals (never Lizzy's strongpoint) and lead guitar drop-outs. It is 99.99 % per cent live! Its simply not possible to re-record large amounts of material and somehow mix it in to an existing recording - this is because you get 'bleeding' from microphones that are inplace to record certain instruments (eg: drums and vocals). So, if a guitar solo was re-recorded in the studio - you would still have some residue of the original 'live' solo on the track - it cant be erased without erasing other instruments. Watch the corresponding dvd from the same era - sounds the same doesnt it? Was that re-recorded? Impossible. All this discussion has diverted attention away from the fact that this is the best live album ever - maybe even the best album fullstop. Thin Lizzy at their peak were head and shoulders above everyone else, and nobody else could write like them, sound like them, or perform like them. Thin Lizzy were so much more than a hard rock band, and you dont need to be a rock-fan to love this album.

A rock masterpiece I've just been reading a series of articles about this album, and the various rumours over how "live" it was - from what i've read it seems only the drums and crowd noise were left untampered with - but nevertheless this is superb. Of course if you like Lizzy then you probably already have this. But if you've never listened to them this is a tremendous introduction. If you buy this for one reason buy it to hear Still in Love with You - perhaps the most perfect example of a rock ballad you will ever hear.

Why are Lizzy still so popular-This is Why This Album despite being nearly 30years old is a masterpiece from start to finish and shows Lizzy as being a better band live than when sampled from the studio. Listen to Still in love you, Suicide-Rosalie, Warrior and emerald studio versions and compare to the L&D sound. OK so there have been rumours as to how mush of this is actually raw but don't get bogged down in the clap-rap just listen to the music and make your opinion. Let the music speak for itself. Anybody who has any doubts as to the quality of this band should also listen to the various B sides of the singles that also had live tracks as these also stand up excellent. Example of this is the Killers Live EP with Bad Reputation-Opium Trail which should have been included on the Live and Dangerous Album. Master class from the best front man in the business.

great hard rock with tunes This is Thin Lizzy's best record by a considerable margin. Opinions vary as to how much it was tarted up in the studio afterwards - those in the know have said it's 75% live. But this doesn't really matter very much and most prominent live albums have been retouched in the studio anyway. The bottom line is that it contains definitive versions of most of their best songs: Jailbreak, Boys Are Back In Town, Cowboy Song, Don't Believe A Word, Still In Love With You, Emerald and Dancing In The Moonlight and a superb cover of Bob Seger's Rosalie are all as good as Thin Lizzy got, which is very. It's true the album tails off towards the end - Suicide isn't one of Phil Lynott's better songs and its subject matter certainly doesn't make me "wanna boogie", and the version of The Rocker is disappointing compared to the studio version with Eric Bell. But the good stuff easily justifies the 5 stars. Not quite the only Thin Lizzy album you need but very nearly. Certainly buy before any compilation - the only major omission (up to the time of recording) is Whisky In The Jar.

Slick Rock I first heard this album on vinyl 18 years ago and thought the energy, excitement and muscianship was awesome, particularly the interplay between Scott and Gorham. I bought it a few weeks ago to 'relive' that feeling. Still an excellent live album and if you're a big fan of Lizzy it's without parallel. Always difficult getting the energy and feeling of a live performance onto a recording and maybe it's because of this that this album seems a bit too slick, a bit too 'clean'. Yes, there is improvisation and flaws in the performance and there's banter with the audience, but I think it's a little too smooth. It gets 4 stars, compared to AC/DC's "If you Want Blood" for a live album of the same genre. If You Want Blood has much more clout and atmosphere. It's unpredictable, ragged and rough around the edges but that's what a live rock album (any live album) should be.
