Product DescriptionThe clue to what Son Of Rambow is about is all in the title, minus that W, of course (which presumably keeps the lawyers at bay). For it's the story of two young boys who, after watching Sylvester Stallone in action, decide that they can make a home movie addition to the Rambo saga, and ultimately set about to do just that. This proves to be an inspired platform for one of the best British comedies of recent years. Directed by Garth Jennings (who also helmed the big screen adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy), Son Of Rambow is actually at heart the exploration of a friendship between two young boys in the 1980s, and the highs and lows that go along with it. Most, but not all, of the chuckles come from the reimagining of Rambo (replete with stunts and plenty of action), but Son Of Rambow also packs in some poignant, affecting drama without ever feeling like it's in any way overstaying its welcome. And with a musical backing that catches the flavour of the 80s pretty much perfectly, this is a treat of a movie, and a very British one at that. Awful waste of my time I was looking forward to seeing this film for quite some time and I'm honestly regretting spending my money on it... It's awful! Cliche after cliche, bad acting, awful story line and generally the only good thing about it was some questionable french actors! A few smiles were raised by the memories brought back - like the scented rubbers and bad hair do's - but definitely not worth buying - unless it's in the £1 bargain bin! A british film without Julie Walters?? Thank God for that!! This isn't exactly a kids film though I thought it was when I saw it advertised on the sides of buses when it came out! It is a beautiful unsentemental masterpiece! And I'd totally forgotten about Screen test!! And No Julie Walters!! Wehey!! I don't want Pot Noodle Adverts I hope the idiots who felt it necessary to put 20 mins of crap adverts for Pot Noodle et al onto my DVD take onboard that at least the pirates leave this *hit off. On a Saturday night I don't see why I have to filter through what seems like hours of crap just to get to the film I bought. Film was great but you get 1 star for annoying me, should have bought the pirate. It doesnt work. Full of expectation for my boys I bought this DVD. Living in France its got some plot links. It has no continuity. Its got an excerpt from Rambo with a knife to the throat. Its got kids smoking. Come on... Im no prude but is that what want our children to see endorsed. Acting is pretty second rate except for the stereotypical teachers voice. I think Mr Jennings has taken his own trip down memory lane and imposed it on the rest of us. Surburban Hertfordshire (IMDB Locations) makes this sickly nostalgic. Warm and enchanting An unlikely couple of lads work together to make a film inspired by Rambo. It is the early 1980s. Will has been brought up as a member of the Plymouth Brethren, a strict sect that shuns contact with modern technology. He teams up with the school badboy, Lee Carter, and allows himself to be manipulated into becoming the stuntman as Lee attempts to win Screen Tests contest for young film-makers. This is a warm and nostalgic film that concentrates on the relationship between the two boys and shows how their enthusiasm for their projects takes over their lives. Yet, I do feel that it is a film which is quite short and I would like for some of the other characters to be more developed and more fleshed-out. There are moments of great comedy and there is also sensitive exploration of the difficulties that family circumstances presents to the boys yet neither mood is really sustained and the final result is a charming, beautifully-shot film that just feels a bit lightweight.
